National News: The ambitious plan by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to develop an expressway connecting Bengaluru to Mangaluru would improve connectivity significantly.
Seamless, weather-independent road access through a distance of approximately 335 kilometers will convert travel between southern and coastal Karnataka into a new experience.
The expressway will connect Bengaluru and Mangaluru within 4 hours of travel time as against the present journey taking 7-8 hours. It will be a 4-6 lane access-controlled greenfield highway that bypasses the congested pathways, delivering quicker access to key areas like Hassan along the way.
With increasing traffic between the two cities, the expressway would be of prime importance to both commercial and passenger vehicles. It also connects two important cities in India one, Bengaluru, which is a major technology hub in the country; the other is Mangaluru, which is a port city situated on the western coast.
About the Development Process and Bidding information
Nine firms have submitted tenders to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Expressway. MoRTH on Tuesday opened technical bids for the project and then proceeds with the step of technical bids opening. This would take the required couple of months. The financial bids of the technically qualified bidders would then be opened to ascertain the most suitable consultant and contractor.
The MoRTH invited tender for the project in June 2024. The project timeline is around 1.5 years for the DPR with an unknown estimated cost. The technical evaluation followed by contract awarding was to happen in 2025, and the final DPR was expected at the end of 2026.
Once the DPR is in place, the project will pass through various stages that include land acquisition, environmental clearances, and other approvals. Until now, any construction work on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Expressway will not start before 2028. However, once in operation, this will significantly reduce the travel distance through an immense space between the cities, thereby making the otherwise long journey between them much more efficient.
The expressway would form a vital link in upgrading regional connectivity to reduce travel time and enable faster access to key towns and cities between Bengaluru and Mangaluru. This development shall also have major economic benefits by improving transportation of goods and services along this corridor.
The Bengaluru-Mangaluru Expressway will be a landmark infrastructure project in Karnataka, potentially benefiting millions of commuters, tourists, and businesses that rely on the critical route once completed. Further information and updates will be available on portals dedicated to the Mangaluru-Bengaluru Expressway project for those interested in keeping track of progress.
