National News: On Tuesday, October 22, a clash broke out at Jamia Millia Islamia University during Diwali celebrations, after some Muslim students kicked diyas and Ragoli prepared by other students at the campus.
A video clip showing the clash, which is now going viral on social media, shows a large crowd assembled on campus and chanting ‘Allahu Akbar’ and ‘Palestine Zindabad’ slogans.
It occurred during the pre-Diwali celebrations- Jyotirmaya 2024, held inside Gate No. 7 of the university in Delhi.
The ruckus occurred when two groups of students clashed during a Rangoli event that was held during the event.
Some Muslim students were said to have rubbed out a Rangoli prepared by another group of students to welcome the occasion using their feet, which provoked the latter group and led to the rampage on campus. Students also kicked diyas with their feet.
Police were deployed outside the campus to bring the situation under control after the scuffle. The situation has been brought under control.
Although the university is yet to issue an official statement, The Indian Express quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police Southeast Ravi Kumar as saying, “The incident took place around 7:30-8 pm near gate 7. A group of students belonging to ABVP were putting up diyas and rangoli for Diwali, which the other group of students disliked. And so the group of unappeased students demolished those. That led to a scuffle between the two. Both sides resorted to slogans.”
Incidentally, every year on the occasion of Diwali, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, which is the students’ organization affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party, performs the rituals in collaboration with the students of the university. The video of the incident showed a big gathering, causing considerable disorder, with many men and women with backpacks walking around the campus and chanting slogans in support of Palestine.
