Vijayawada: Nagula Chavithi celebrations are being celebrated in the city. Devotees thronged Chodavaram Nagendra Swamy temple and Subrahmanyeshwar Swamy temples in Ayyappa Nagar. Subrahmanyeshwara Swamy Temple Nagula idols are being Abhishek with cows’ milk. Officials have made special arrangements at the temples on the occasion of Nagula Chavithi. A large number of women reach the temples and pour milk in the pot.
Nagula Chavithi means the festival of worshiping serpent deities. Hindus celebrate Chaturthinadu Nagula Chavithi on the fourth day after Diwali Amavasya in the month of Kartika. Nagula Chavithi is the main festival in the month of Kartika in some parts of AP and Tamil Nadu states. Also in some places this festival is celebrated in the month of Shravana. Some people worship Nagadevata idol at home. But in some places devotees go to the snake’s den and make offerings and do other pujas and pour milk. On the occasion of Nagula Chawthi, women fast and perform Naga Puja. Also milk is poured at the potta in the temples and offerings are made. Women perform Naga Puja to keep their children safe. Sweets made from a mixture of milk, saffron, turmeric, vibhuti, jaggery and black sesame are made from a mixture of milk jaggery, white sesame and unboiled and kept as an offering at the shrines. Some people also keep eggs at the nest. Turmeric and saffron are added and flowers are placed on the Nagadevata’s mound. They light the lamp and keep the offering they have brought with them at the mound. After pooja, women take some putta mannu. Devotees believe that if Nagendra is worshiped on Nagula Chavithi and Nagula Panchami day, all diseases will be removed and they will become healthy.
