In Paris Paralympics 2024, Indian athletes Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu won silver and bronze medals in T63 category in high jump.
These players have performed brilliantly and brought medals to India. 19-year-old American athlete Ezra Frech created a new Paralympic record with a jump of 1.94 meters. Sharad Kumar has been performing well for India for some time now. He also won a bronze medal for India in the last Paralympics. This time he changed the color of his medal. Sharad once won gold medal in high jump in T63 category. But the American athlete did not let his dreams come true. He could not clear his personal best jump of 1.88m and had to settle for a silver medal.
Mariappan Thangavelu won gold medal in Paralympics 2016, silver medal in 2020 and bronze medal this time. He won medals in three consecutive Paralympics. Apart from Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar, there is one other Indian in the medal race. His name is Shailesh Kumar. But he could not win a medal and finished fourth. Indian athletes have performed brilliantly in Paris Paralympics 2024. India has won a total of 20 medals so far with 3 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze medals. India is currently ranked 18th in the medal table. Last time India won a total of 19 medals.
In the Paris Paralympics women’s 400m T20 athletics event, World Championship gold medalist Deepti Jeevanjee of India won the bronze medal with a time of 55.82 seconds. She finished third in the final. Deepti, who will turn 21 this month, finished third behind Ukraine’s Yulia Shulyar (55.16 seconds) and world record holder Aysel Onder of Turkey (55.23 seconds).

20-year-old Deepti came to Paris after winning the world championships in Kobe earlier this year with a world record time of 55.07 seconds. She also won the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 with a timing of 56.69 seconds. While qualifying for the final in Heat 2 on September 2, Deepti’s world record was broken by Aysel Onder of Turkey. Onder set the world record with a timing of 54.96 seconds. In the final, Isel Onder won the silver medal with a timing of 55.23 seconds. Deepti finished third, half a second behind in 55.82 seconds.
