A cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal is affecting the district. It has been raining continuously since Saturday night across the district. Due to incessant rain, all the people are confined to their homes.
The Meteorological Department has earlier predicted heavy rains in the district due to the low pressure that formed in the west-central Bay of Bengal on Thursday. Later, as it moved towards the north, it was thought that there might not be much rain in Visakhapatnam. But weather experts say it changed direction after it strengthened into a cyclone on Sunday. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rains are falling in the district.
Due to the incessant rain in the city, the drains and gutters are overflowing and the water is reaching the roads. The water has stopped on the roads in Isukthota, Jagadamba Koodali, Akkayayapalem and other areas. Geddas have become dangerous in Anandapuram, Padmanabham and Bhimili mandals. Paddy fields in low-lying areas were submerged. In Gnanapuram, there was a problem with traffic due to standing water under the Chavulamadum railway bridge. Due to this, the vehicles going towards Convent intersection were diverted through Boudara Road and Harbor Police Station.
Heavy rains today and tomorrow
According to officials of the Cyclone Warning Center in Visakhapatnam, there will be heavy to very heavy rains in the district on Monday and Tuesday due to the effect of the cyclone. There is a risk of thunder, 30 to 40 km per hour. They warned that the winds will blow at high speed.
Officials on alert..: The district administration has been alerted in the wake of heavy rains. GVMC Commissioner Sampath Kumar, who went to Vijayawada to supervise relief operations, is continuously monitoring the situation here. Officials were directed to take necessary action. To this extent, the authorities have alerted the people in the hilly areas. Officials said that a total of 80 rehabilitation centers have been set up.
