Olympics: Higuchi, the gold medallist in the men’s 57kg freestyle event, had been eliminated from the qualifiers of the Tokyo Olympics three years ago because he was overweight by just 50gm. Higuchi was a silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He was disqualified at the Tokyo Olympics at home. He won the gold in Paris.
“I understand your pain the best. Same 50g. Don’t worry about the voices around you. Life goes on. Rising from setbacks is the most beautiful thing. Take a good rest,” Higuchi wrote on X while commenting on Vinesh’s retirement announcement.
“I have passed through a setback and despair, but I managed to succeed by believing in myself. Still, I don’t think I could’ve won the gold medal with my efforts alone,” Higuchi was quoted as saying through ‘Japan News’, in retrospect of the Tokyo debacle for which he blamed his fondness for junk food back then.
Vinesh has appealed with the ad-hoc division of the CAS against her disqualification and the verdict is expected to come later this evening after the hearing is completed on Friday.
