Latest News: In a highly distressing incident, a Hindu woman was reportedly raped and killed in Bangladesh’s Jessore district. According to sources, the victim was Sabita Rani Dey who had gone missing on September 24 morning after she had left around 8 AM to cut grass in a field at Bhatpara village.
Hours of searches by worried villagers ended in tragedy last night when the body of Sabita was retrieved from the septic tank of local resident Ramzan Sheikh. Villagers believe that Sheikh had raped and murdered the woman, later hiding her body. The body was eventually recovered when Ramzan Sheikh ran away from the village and is now absconding.
A shocking incident has stirred people’s emotions, demanding justice for Sabita and her restive family with as less delay as possible. The murder is blamed on a much larger pattern of violence and persecution of Hindu minority groups in the region. Reports of violent attacks against Hindus have gone up over the months that have kept people on edge, earning it some scathing appellation for a pogrom.
A case is investigation by police
The incident took place in Abhaynagar Police Station, Jessore district area. The police are now searching for suspect Ramzan Sheikh. The arrest and motive of arrest are not confirmed or verified yet. Police are also skeptical about the local allegations that the accused is involved with the case of rape and murder.
In the course of investigation, human rights groups and minority communities of Bangladesh have asked for more effective safeguarding of Hindus in rural areas where most Hindus are exposed to harassment and violence.
Heightened concern for the security of minorities
The tragic death of Sabita Rani Dey highlights growing concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, where violence against Hindus continues to be a looming threat. In fact, fears run that some ongoing incidents of violence might be part of a larger series of communal attacks, as some incidents continue to go underreported. International observers, too, have raised alarms with appeals to the Bangladeshi government to ensure justice and take firm measures to stop further atrocities.
