Latest News in India: All set for the third and final phase of the Assembly elections. Jammu and Kashmir go to polls tomorrow, Tuesday, 1 October. As many as 415 candidates – candidates from various political parties and Independents – will be in fray in the first batches of polls for the forty constituencies that are going to the polling tomorrow.
The third phase of polling to be held tomorrow will see 39.18 lakh voters exercising their franchise.
Elections will begin tomorrow at 7 AM in 5,060 polling stations in seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Of the 40 seats going to the polls tomorrow, 16 fall in the Kashmir region while 24 lie in the Jammu province.
The 16 assembly segments going to polls on Tuesday include: Karnah, Trehgam, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara, Langate, Sopore, Rafiabad, Uri, Baramulla, Gulmarg, Wagoora-Kreeri, Pattan, Sonawari, Bandipora and Gurez (ST).
Of the 24 constituencies of Jammu, those going to polls are Udhampur West, Udhampur East, Chenani, Ramnagar (SC), Bani, Billawar, Basohli, Jasrota, Kathua (SC), Hiranagar, Ramgarh (SC), Samba, and Vijaypur, Bishnah (SC). Suchetgarh (SC), R S Pura, Jammu South, Bahu, Jammu East, Nagrota, Jammu West, Jammu North, Marh (SC), Akhnoor (SC), and Chhamb.
Jammu and Kashmir Elections Phase 3: Key Candidates and Fights – This is indeed the phase where the grand drama of electoral politics in Jammu and Kashmir will unfold, with some interesting contests to watch out in the Kashmir region between the National Conference, the People’s Democratic party and the People’s Conference locked in battle.
Veteran politician and president of Peoples’ Conference Sajad Lone is contesting against five-time legislator and minister Choudhary Ramzan in Handwara constituency. Langate will be another main constituency in focus where Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid’s brother Sheikh Khursheed and PC’s candidate Irfan Ahmad Ganaie are in a tight fight. Lolab, Kupwara and Tregham seats will have direct fights between the NC and PDP while in Baramulla segment, there will be a close fight between the uncle Muzaffar Baig and his paternal nephew Javaid Baig. In Uri, former minister Taj Mohiuddin will take on NC Dr Sajjad Shafi.
Voting to be held under tight security cover: Security has been stepped up in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of elections in the third and final phase. The Jammu and Kashmir Police monitored the security situation in the Baramulla assembly constituency on Sunday where polling will be held in the final phase on October 1.
In the last round, voting also occurs at a time when protests over the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nazrallah are going in the Kashmir Valley. The protests also received political parties, including the National Conference and the people’s Democratic party, as allies.
