As he announced his formal statement, Obama said, ‘As I said on the campaign trail, America has been through a lot over the last few years – from a historic pandemic and price hikes resulting from the pandemic, to rapid change and the feeling a lot of folks have that, no matter how hard they work, treading water is the best they can do,
Obama added. “Those conditions have created headwinds for democratic incumbents around the world, and last night showed that America is not immune.
He also said, ‘The good news is that these problems are solvable – but only if we listen to each other, and only if we abide by the core constitutional principles and democratic norms that made this country great.’
In a statement published shortly after Harris made her remarks at Howard University, Barack and Michelle Obama observed that America’s diverse electorate would react to the country’s circumstances, leading to Republican victories in the races. The Obamas called on Americans to “welcome differences ” with good faith and grace.

Harris, visibly choked up, called on supporters to remain hopeful in the face of the result: “This isn’t what we wanted.” She pledged to help facilitate a peaceful handover of power, she said during a small, intimate appearance where she mentioned that she’d just spoken with Trump – an exchange that drew mixed reactions from her audience.
