Latest News: Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena leader, was convicted by a Mumbai court today in a criminal defamation case based on the complaint filed by Dr. Medha Kirit Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
Along with the conviction, the court has given a fine of Rs 25000 on him and awarded 15-day imprisonment in the defamation case.
MLC Raut was accused of making comments that were labelled as defamatory by Dr Medha Somaiya against her husband Kirit Somaiya, whereas it was alleged that the couple was involved in a Rs 100-crore corruption case relating to the construction of public toilets that came under the area jurisdiction of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
On April 12, 2022, Raut had written an article in Samna Online saying political power used to get a contact for building public toilets under the jurisdiction of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation by Medha Somaiya, who is a convicted in a corruption case.

Somaiya had filed a criminal defamation case against Raut, alleging that the article caused her mental stress. “Thereafter, my relatives and friends have become suspicious of me and started questioning as to what is happening with me and in what circumstances,” she said. According to the complaint, these claims by Raut have marred the image of her and her family in the eyes of society. She said before the court that all this happening to her has made her feel ashamed and it is all because of the article written by Raut under the pseudo-name in Samna.
Dr. Somaiya also adduced before the court stating that after Raut’s article, a news channel also telecasted a news item that she was a part of a “toilet scam.” She apprised the court that such articles have caused severe damage to her and her family’s reputation in society.
Today, Metropolitan Magistrate 25th Court, Mazgaon has convicted Sanjay Raut on this complaint filed by the wife of the BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, Dr. Medha Somaiya.
