NRI Latest News: A few years ago, South Korean police will solve a mind-boggling cold case dating back to 2008 by arresting a man in his 50s for murdering his girlfriend, who lived in the apartment, and encasing her body in cement on their apartment balcony.
A report by Korean Times says the murder had gone on undisclosed for years and was filed as a case of a missing person until it was fortuitously discovered last month. This was when a construction worker repairing a leak on the rooftop balcony stumbled on a travel suitcase encased in concrete and bricks containing partly preserved remains.
Initial investigations in the year 2011 were suspected to point towards her boyfriend named A. In the absence of tangible evidence and leads, they could draw no conclusion. However, forensic technology progress and re-examination led the detectives to re-question the boyfriend.
He confessed to having killed his then-girlfriend who was about his 30s in the grip of an argument over a love issue in October 2008. He said he struck her head and face using a bludgeon. He put the dead body into a suitcase and buried it under a layer of bricks and cement on his balcony.
The body was identified through fingerprint analysis. Autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blunt trauma to the head. The police identified the boyfriend as their first suspect. He was arrested on September 19 in Yangsan.
Further disclosures brought to the fore how the crime was not detected for so long. The boyfriend had lied to B’s family and the landlord about her leaving him after a fight. Interestingly, her family had lost contact with her and were kept in the dark about her whereabouts. When they traveled to Geoje in search of their daughter, Mr A reassured them that the couple had parted ways, and B had left the city.
He remained living in the apartment until 2017 when he was arrested on charges of drug offenses. The landlord did not know the gruesome secret. Since then, he had been using the room to store items and had not touched the body for more than six years as it were concreted.
The boyfriend is charged with offenses associated with his intake of drugs. Prosecutors will re-analyze the case when the investigations are done.
