The cost of middle class kitchen will increase further. As the Center has increased the import duty on crude and refined cooking oils up to 20 percent at once, the prices of cooking oils will increase to that extent.
This burden will fall on various types of oils including palm oil, soya, sunflower. Till now there was no duty on their crude oils. Such is now levied at a lump sum of 20 percent and will hit the pockets of the poor and middle class. Refined palm oil, soya and sunflower oils were previously subject to 12.5 percent import duty.
It has now been increased by 20 percent to 32.5 percent. Customs duty on crude oil has been increased to 27.5 percent and customs duty on refined oil to 35.75 percent. It will come into force from 14th of this month. At the same time, the export duty on onions was halved. It has reduced the customs duty from 40 percent to 20 percent at present.
