NRI Latest News: On Sunday, a violent incident took place at the Hindu Sabha Mandir on Gore Road in Brampton, Canada, where a group of men were seen waving pro-Khalistani flags.
The attack was directed against devotees and has caused widespread outrage, further underlining the tension between the Khalistani movement and the Hindu community in Canada.
It is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing trend. Recently, a spate of attacks on Hindu temples in Canada has made news headlines. Earlier there was another incident of vandalism at Windsor, which also involved graffiti against India. Such threats against temples in Mississauga and Brampton have evoked extremely sharp reactions from the Indian community in Canada. In the past December, shots had also been heard at Satish Kumar’s house – Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey is being run by him – a president in that area and that had further worsened the atmosphere of terror.
Khalistani supporters have raised their levels of scrutiny for Indian diplomats in Canada especially after the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver last year. No evidence has been given that Indian agents have been behind the killing blamed on India by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
It spiralled out of control in the last month when it reported that the Indian High Commissioner along with other diplomats were among the “persons of interest” in the murder probe. India termed the allegations “preposterous” as they were part of an agenda by Trudeau to defame India. In its reaction, India recalled the High Commissioner and several other diplomats, saying their safety had become compromised due to Canadian moves, and expelled six other diplomats from Canada.
The attack on the Hindu temple is considered an outright attack on a consular camp that the Indian High Commission had organized for helping senior citizens in the community. The High Commission had earlier sought adequate security measures from Canadian authorities to guard such routine consular events. In a statement, they expressed deep disappointment over the violent disruptions, emphasizing the need for safety for all participants.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a declared Khalistani activist and Sikhs for Justice member, had earlier issued a threat to disrupt Diwali celebrations in Hindu temples. He has been openly supportive of the Trudeau regime and has increased aggressive rhetoric against Canadian Hindus, asking Hindus to return to India.
The attacks form a larger strategy to intimidate the Hindu community and amplify anti-India feelings among the Sikh population in Canada. Responding to the latest attack, Canadian MP Chandra Arya said that Khalistani extremists had penetrated the very fabric of Canadian law enforcement. He believes that leniency towards the extremists in the name of freedom of expression is alarmingly increasing their boldness.
Critics say the Trudeau government is sacrificing India-Canada relations for votes of Khalistani voters. A security analyst, Joe Adam George, said, “The acts of Justin Trudeau have compromised national security in Canada because of downplaying the threats brought about by Khalistani extremism; such threats have been warned to the governments of India for decades.”.
Ujjal Dosanjh, an Indian-origin politician and former premier of British Columbia, had spoken to the media on the issue of his not understanding this majority of Sikhs in Canada. He claimed that Trudeau was giving a base for Khalistani ideology to dominate the narrative so that a moderate Sikh may not be able to point out anything without facing retaliation.
In a statement, the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council condemned the attack on the Brampton Hindu temple, urging building interfaith understanding and mutual respect in the community.
