Paruvu Review:

Rating: 3.5/5

Story:

Paruvu, a new Telugu web series on ZEE5, is set against the backdrop of caste discrimination and honor killings. The story follows Dolly (Nivetha Pethuraj), from an upper-caste family in Guntur, who marries Sudheer (Naresh Agastya), a man from a lower caste, against her family’s wishes. They live in Hyderabad until Dolly learns about her uncle’s death. Deciding to pay her respects, she and Sudheer travel with her cousin Chandu (Sunil Kommisetty). Suspicion arises when Dolly believes Chandu is plotting to kill them. In a twist of events, Sudheer kills Chandu, plunging the couple into a web of deceit and danger.

Positives:

  • Engaging Narrative: Despite dealing with multiple themes like caste discrimination, honor killings, and social hierarchy, the series maintains a cohesive and engaging narrative.
  • Strong Performances: Nivetha Pethuraj and Naresh Agastya deliver standout performances, with Nivetha getting one of the best roles of her career. Praneetha Patnaik shines as well, particularly in scenes where she searches for her missing fiancé.
  • Character Development: Each character is well-developed and integral to the plot, making the story more immersive.
  • Linked Subplots: The series weaves multiple subplots seamlessly, creating a complex and intriguing storyline.
  • Naga Babu’s Role: Naga Babu brings gravitas to his role as a politician, adding depth to the series.

Negatives:

  • Slow Start: The initial episodes and character introductions could have been more engaging, making it difficult to connect with the story at first.
  • Pacing Issues: The series experiences pacing dips, with some episodes feeling slower than others.
  • Excessive Runtime: The series could have benefited from a shorter runtime to maintain viewer interest.
  • Profanity: The use of cuss words may deter family audiences, despite being justified by the characters’ situations.

Technical Aspects:

  • Music and Visuals: Shravan Bharadwaj’s background score enhances the tension, while Chinta Vidya Sagar’s cinematography sets a gripping mood.
  • Production Values: High production values are evident, thanks to Sushmitha Konidela’s backing.
  • Editing: The editing by Viplav could have been tighter, especially to address the pacing issues.
  • Direction: Showrunner Pavan Sadineni and directors Siddharth Naidu and Rajasekhar Vadlapati successfully deliver a compelling narrative, despite some hiccups in pacing.

Verdict:

Paruvu is a multi-layered web series that captivates with its intriguing subplots and strong performances. The initial episodes might feel slow, and the runtime could have been shorter, but the solid writing and character development make it worth watching. If you enjoy crime thrillers with social themes, Paruvu is a series you shouldn’t miss.
