At Chennai International Airport, there is a surge in gold smuggling cases. In a few months, a seizure of gold worth about Rs. 167 crore has taken place.
It is in this context that some 60 special staff have been assigned to properly scrutinize international travelers following the warning by intelligence officials to catch gold smugglers at the Chennai airport. Even after that, it was discovered that illegal gold was entering Tamil Nadu from outside through Chennai. The IB officers significantly heightened their vigilance, thus beginning to wonder about the distribution of the gold, which was in full swing. An investigation was launched in that direction.
