Latest News in India: The Karnataka government’s recent bill to reserve jobs for the local private sector has drawn sharp criticism from industry leaders. The bill provides for 50% reservation for Kannadigas in administrative posts and 75% in non-administrative posts, and also for 100% reservation in CandD category government posts.
Passed on Tuesday by the government of Karnataka, the law has raised howls of protests from tech and business gurus who have decried it as being unconstitutional and cavalier to the country’s finances.
Mohandas Pai, president of Manipal Global Education Services, called his bill “discriminatory and regressive.”. He posted on social media: “This bill should be rejected. It is discriminatory, regressive and unconstitutional. Is the purpose of the government to prove who we are? This is a fascist bill that resembles an “animal farm”. Unbelievable that the government can introduce such a law – a civil servant sits on recruitment committees in the private sector? Do people have to take a language test?”
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CEO of Biocon Limited, expressed concern over the impact the law would create on the technology sector. “As a technology hub, we need skilled talent and while the aim is to provide local jobs, this a move should not affect our leadership position in technology. There must be caveats that exempt highly skilled recruitment from this practice,” Shaw tweeted.
ASSOCHAM Karnataka co-chairman and YULU founder RK Misra also slammed the bill.,”Another big move by Karnataka Govt. Allow local reservation and appoint a government official to oversee all business. This scares Indian IT and global call centers.” wrote Misra.
