Latest news India : To check the “unlimited powers” of the Waqf Board, the central government is going to bring the Waqf Board Act Amendment Bill with a view to providing proper representation to the rest of the Muslim community.
This bill will be introduced in the Lok Sabha tomorrow (Thursday). Minority Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju will introduce the bill. The Bill is being introduced with the aim of streamlining the process of registration of Waqf properties through a central portal. However, many Muslim MPs are opposing this bill.
The Bill proposes to rename the Waqf Act as the Consolidated Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995. It seems that the priority of the government is to get this law unanimously approved by the Lok Sabha. If necessary, the government is ready to send a joint committee for discussion. Sources said that around 70 groups have been consulted on this bill in the last two months. The government says that the main objective of this bill is not only to free the Waqf properties from illegal encroachment but also to give justice to poor Muslims and Muslim women.
