Maharaja Review:

Rating: 3.5/5

Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) is a salon owner living peacefully with his daughter, Jyothi. His world turns upside down when he reports to the police that three thieves have stolen his beloved Laxmi and attacked him. The police, puzzled by Laxmi’s identity, reluctantly start an investigation. Who is Laxmi? Why is she so important to Maharaja? Will he get her back? These questions form the crux of the movie.

  • Vijay Sethupathi’s Performance: Exceptional portrayal of a dual character – an innocent father and a desperate man.
  • Non-linear Narration: The unique storytelling method keeps the audience engaged.
  • Emotional Scenes: Powerful and moving, especially during the interval and climax.
  • Supporting Cast: Anurag Kashyap delivers a strong performance despite limited screen time.
  • Screenplay: Keeps viewers intrigued with its twists and turns.

  • Complex Storyline: The twisty narration can make the familiar story confusing.
  • Underdeveloped Characters: Supporting characters like Bharathiraja, Mamta Mohandas, and Abhirami lack depth.
  • Dark Comedy: The humor in the first half may not resonate with everyone.
  • Pacing Issues: Slow moments in both halves might test the audience’s patience.
  • Timeline Confusion: Missing a few minutes can make it difficult to follow the story’s timeline.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: Nithilan Swaminathan presents a compelling story but could improve pacing.
  • Cinematography: Dinesh Purushothaman’s work is competent, capturing the film’s essence.
  • Editing: Philomin Raj’s editing is adequate, though could be tighter to maintain interest.
  • Music: Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score effectively enhances emotional scenes.
  • Production Values: Solid production under the banner of Mythri Movie Makers.
  • Dubbing and Dialogues: Telugu dubbing and dialogues are well executed.

Overall, Maharaja is a slow-burn tale of emotions and vengeance. Vijay Sethupathi’s exceptional performance and engaging screenplay keep viewers intrigued. The emotional ending, jaw-dropping twist, and impactful interval are highlights. However, the slow narration and underdeveloped supporting characters may not appeal to everyone. If you enjoy slow-burn films with strong performances, Maharaja is worth watching this weekend.
