At a recent awards ceremony, Mani Ratnam shared details about his upcoming movie with Kamal Haasan and why it’s been more than three decades since their last collaboration.
Last year, the exciting news of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan joining forces for a film called “Thug Life” sparked anticipation among fans. They even treated the audience to a teaser on November 6, unveiling the movie’s title and the cast and crew details. Notably, “Thug Life” marks only their second collaboration, following the 1987 film “Nayakan.”
During the CNN News18 Indian of the Year Awards, Mani Ratnam was asked why it took so long to work with Kamal Haasan again. He explained that working with an actor of Kamal Haasan’s caliber requires solid content, and one shouldn’t approach him just because they’ve collaborated before. Ratnam expressed hope in bringing a compelling character to the screen in their new venture.
When questioned about potential ego clashes with big stars, Ratnam dismissed the notion, stating that stars usually don’t have big egos during collaborations. He emphasized the importance of a clear vision, asserting that stars trust the director’s decisions when there’s a mutual understanding.
“Thug Life” features a star-studded cast, including Dulquer Salmaan, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, Joju George, and Gautham Karthik. The film’s teaser introduced Kamal Haasan as Rangaraja Sakthivel Naicker, hinting at a gangster thriller with Dulquer Salmaan possibly playing a district collector.
Apart from acting and directing, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam are jointly producing the film under Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies banners. AR Rahman is in charge of the music, Ravi C Chandran handles the cinematography, and A Sreekar Prasad serves as the editor. Action choreography is entrusted to the talented duo Anbariv.
