Ex-US President Donald Trump was reportedly a target of a suspected assassination try during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Saturday. Shots rang out during a campaign rally for the 2024 US presidential election when Trump was immediately dragged off the stage, with his ears bloody.
Secret Service agents and his aides stormed straight onto the stage and surrounded the former US president, who was reportedly “in good spirits” after an assassination attempt.
The attack, whom law enforcement officials later told the Secret Service had been declared dead, would be the first attempt to kill a serving or former president, or a candidate for the presidency since the 1981 shooting of Ronald Reagan.
It went down in a deeply polarized political atmosphere, just four months before the presidential election, days before Trump was to be formally nominated as the Republican candidate, at the party’s convention.
The shooter was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Crooks of Bethel Park reportedly waited on the roof of a factory some 400-plus feet from the stage before opening fire. He was finally killed. The FBI is yet to establish the motive for the attack.
Authorities have confirmed that after firing his gun, he was ambushed and killed by operatives of a heavily armed counter-attack squad from the U.S. Secret Service.
It is however still unclear whether President Trump was hit by gunfire or was injured as he was dragged to the ground by operatives.
As Trump was speaking at the rally – a bang was heard and the billionaire touched his ear. He was crouched on the stage when two more gunshots were heard. It took two minutes from the moment the first shot was fired until President Trump was loaded into a waiting SUV.
As operatives attacked the former president, someone could be heard yelling: “Down, down, down, down!
” near the microphone at Trump’s podium. They swarmed around him, following training protocol, shielding him with their bodies while other agents onstage took up positions to search for the threat.
