The Manohar Parrikar Institute For Defence Studies And Analysis highlights the Nine Degree Channel near Lakshadweep as the most direct route for ships from the Persian Gulf to East Asia. Proximity to India’s western coast, neighboring island nations like Sri Lanka and Maldives, and its location along busy shipping lanes make the islands pivotal for securing sea lanes and maritime interests.
