In a recent display that could be straight out of a “Black Mirror” episode, China military unveiled a robot dog equipped with an automatic gun during joint exercises with Cambodia. This new robotic canine could revolutionize modern warfare. During the “Golden Dragon 2024” exercise, the robot dog demonstrated impressive agility and versatility, walking, bouncing, lying down, and moving backward under remote control.
In one exercise, the armed robot dog led infantry into a mock building, showcasing its potential for urban combat operations. The robot dog, controlled by soldiers, can conduct reconnaissance, identify enemies, and strike targets, according to soldier Chen Wei. The video also featured a six-rotor aerial drone carrying an automatic gun, further illustrating China advancements in intelligent unmanned equipment.
These developments highlight China’s growing expertise in military robotics and drones. Robotic dogs and small aerial drones are not new in military applications. The U.S. Air Force, for instance, used robotic dogs in 2020 as part of its Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) to detect and counter threats using artificial intelligence and rapid data analytics.
Similarly, drones have played a significant role in the Ukraine conflict, allowing smaller military units to engage more effectively against better-funded opponents. China, a leading exporter of drones, restricted drone exports last year for national security reasons.
