India clarified on Thursday that it hasn’t put forward any proposal for a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with the Maldives. However, the country stated its readiness to consider such an agreement if the Maldives expresses interest. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized, “No specific proposal for a bilateral FTA with the Maldives has been made by the Government of India. If the Government of Maldives expresses interest in having an FTA with India, we will give it due consideration.”
Mr. Jaiswal made these remarks during his weekly media briefing, responding to queries. Last week, Maldivian Minister for Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed indicated that India has initiated efforts for an FTA between the two nations. He mentioned, “They (India) want there to be a Free Trade Agreement with the Maldives, in addition to SAFTA (South Asian Free Trade Agreement).”
