Kathmandu: Dramatic developments are taking place in the politics of Nepal. A new coalition is preparing to take over the reins of the coalition government led by the current Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ (69). Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Dev Ba (78), Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist – Leninist (CPN-UML) President and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli (72) came to a decision on Monday night to form a new coalition government. However, Prime Minister Prachanda refused to resign even on Tuesday. He said in a meeting of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) office bearers that he would face a no-confidence motion in Parliament rather than resign. According to the constitution, the prime minister has 30 days to get the confidence of the parliament.
Prachanda, who has been in power for the past year and a half, has already passed the trust test thrice. Four months ago, Oli-led CPN-UML withdrew its support to the Prachanda government, leading to the collapse of the government. Oli withdrew support due to dissatisfaction with the budget presented for the year 2024-25. Oli party ministers will also resign from the coalition government.
After the collapse of the Prachanda coalition, Devba and Oli decided to amend the constitution under the new national consensus government that they would form. Both of them will hold the post of Prime Minister on rotation for the remaining three years of the term of the Parliament. Devba Nepali Congress is the largest party with 89 seats in the 275-seat Nepali Parliament. If Oli’s 78 seats are included, it will get a majority of 167 seats. This is more than the simple majority of 138 seats. 13 governments have changed in Nepal in the last sixteen years, so it can be understood how unstable the politics there is.
