Dr. Maninder Singh Shahi, an Indian-origin doctor with over 35 years of experience, has been suspended by the Disciplinary Tribunal of Singapore for illegally prescribing narcotics to patients. The tribunal found him guilty of recommending narcotics to seven patients and failing to record reasons for these prescriptions. The suspension from medical practice is for three years. Dr. Shahi, who practiced at the 81 Family Clinic in Marine Parade Central, pleaded guilty to 14 charges related to actions from 2002 to 2016.
The charges involved prescribing benzodiazepines, zopiclone, and zolfidem, drugs used for insomnia and anxiety. Dr. Singh prescribed these drugs to patients ranging from seven years to 13 years and 8 months, well beyond the recommended period of two to four weeks for such medications, as per the SMC Code of Ethics and Guidelines.
Despite his extensive experience, the tribunal upheld the recommendations of the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and rejected the lawyer’s plea. The report highlighted the importance of ethical drug prescriptions and adherence to guidelines in medical practice.
