Trump asserted that if he wins the upcoming election, Putin will immediately release Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich from a Russian jail. Trump has previously touted his close ties with Putin, often asserting that he could end the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of returning to office. However, he has not provided specific details on how he would achieve this. Reacting to Trump’s claims, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that there have been no recent contacts between Putin and Trump. Peskov reiterated that any discussions regarding prisoner exchanges must occur discreetly and in complete silence. Earlier this year, Putin hinted that Gershkovich’s release could be negotiated in exchange for a Russian prisoner held in Germany on murder charges.
