Andhra Pradesh Elections: In preparation for the imminent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the head of the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), has strategically appointed 27 new party coordinators and in-charges for various Assembly and parliamentary seats for upcoming Andhra Pradesh Elections. This move follows the recent appointment of 11 in-charges by Jagan.
The newly appointed coordinators and in-charges will be the fresh YSRCP candidates, replacing the incumbents in these seats. The selection process is based on the “winning ability of the sitting MLAs and MPs,” according to senior YSRCP leader and education minister Botsa Satyanaryana.
With synchronized elections approaching for the 175-member Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats in about three months, the YSRCP is also considering the influence of the principal opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the K Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party (JSP) in certain regions and making adjustments accordingly.
Among the 27 newly appointed YSRCP coordinators and in-charges are four sons and one daughter of party leaders. Notable appointments include Perni Krishnamurthy for the Machilipatnam Assembly seat, Bhumana Abhinay Reddy for Tirupati, and Noori Fatima for the Guntur East seat.
The changes aim to ensure proper representation of all sections of society, with coordinators selected through discussions and considerations of winning chances for sitting MLAs and MPs, as stated by Satyanaryana. Notable appointments include Penukonda MLA Malagundla Sankaranarayana as the coordinator for the Anantapur Lok Sabha seat and J Shanta for the Hindupur seat.
The YSRCP leadership has strategically designated candidates for various seats, including Araku MP G Madhavi for the Araku Assembly seat, Rajamahendravaram MP M Bharat for Rajamahendravaram City, and Anantapur MP T Rangaiah for the Kalyandurg Assembly seat.
In the 2019 polls, YSRCP secured 151 Assembly seats and 22 Lok Sabha seats against the TDP’s 23 and 3, respectively. With the Congress eyeing a comeback and Jagan’s sister, Y S Sharmila, set to join the party, the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh is undergoing significant shifts. Jagan’s restructuring is perceived as a response to potential challenges for the YSRCP, particularly among some incumbent MLAs.
Meanwhile, the TDP expresses optimism, citing the success of party general secretary N Lokesh Naidu’s statewide “Yuva Galam Yatra.” The evolving political dynamics set the stage for a closely contested election in the state.
