The aspirations of YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to establish Visakhapatnam as the capital city have faced a significant setback, as the state high court on Friday rejected the proposal to relocate the Chief Minister’s camp office (CMO).
Earlier, the Supreme Court had declined to stay the state high court’s decision on March 3, 2022, affirming Amaravati as the state capital. The Supreme Court deferred the hearing on the state government’s plea to April, thereby thwarting Jagan’s attempt to implement a three-capital system during his current term.
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had been relying on the strategy of relocating the CM and other ministers’ camp offices to Visakhapatnam as a last-ditch effort to persuade the public, especially before the upcoming elections, of his commitment to shifting a part of the administration to the port city.
However, this final hope was dashed on Friday when the high court stated that the single judge’s directives preventing the relocation of offices to Visakhapatnam would persist. The bench declared its inability to lift the orders issued by the single judge and indicated that a decision on who would hear the appeal would be forthcoming.
During the proceedings, the advocate general attempted to elucidate the reasoning behind the capital offices’ relocation and the camp office’s relocation to Visakhapatnam. In response, the court instructed the government to furnish details regarding the number of offices, officers slated to move to Visakhapatnam, and the designated area for the relocation.
The farmers of Amaravati had filed a petition in the high court, asserting that the state government was attempting to shift the capital under the guise of developing Uttar Andhra. Recently, the single-judge bench of the High Court forwarded the petitions to a three-judge bench. The YSRCP government assured the court that the offices would not be relocated until the three-judge bench issues its orders.
