In the recent development of the upcoming Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced the second list of 24 candidates on Tuesday night. This decision comes after the release of the first list containing 11 candidates on December 11, where Jagan Mohan Reddy dropped three sitting MLAs.
In the second list, a notable move is the exclusion of 10 sitting MLAs, signaling a significant reshuffling within the party. The earlier decision to omit three MLAs in the first list, combined with this recent move, amounts to a total of 13 sitting MLAs being denied tickets out of the 35 candidates finalized for the assembly elections. It’s important to note that the YSRCP currently holds 151 out of 175 seats in the assembly.
Senior YSRC leader Botsa Satyanarayana stated that these changes were made after a thorough assessment of the winning prospects of the candidates. He emphasized that this process would continue until the party announces candidates for all 175 seats, with the ultimate goal of securing victory for the party in a second successive term.
Among the sitting MLAs denied tickets are Alla Ramakrishna Reddy from Mangalagiri, TJR Sudhakar Babu from Santhanuthalapadu (SC), and Tippala Nagi Reddy from Gajuwaka. Additionally, Jagan Mohan Reddy also denied a ticket to Gorantla Madhav, the party MP from Hindupur parliamentary constituency.
The reshuffling involves shifting MLAs to different constituencies and accommodating the kin of some MLAs. Notable changes include Adimulapu Suresh moving from Yerragondapalem (SC) to Kondepi and Kambala Jogulu shifting from Rajam-SC to Payakaraopet-SC. The move also affects MPs, with Vanga Geetha moving from Kakinada to Pithapuram assembly constituency.
The second list introduces new candidates for three Lok Sabha constituencies: Malagundla Sankaranarayana (Anantapur), Joladarashi Shanta (Hindupur), and Kottagulli Bhagya Lakshmi (Araku-ST). The reshuffling of key positions within the party, the dropping of MLAs, and the denial of tickets have caused unrest and speculation within the YSRCP.
While some MLAs have resigned, like Alla Ramakrishna Reddy, others who were denied tickets are exploring alternative political options. Vijayawada (Central) MLA Malladi Vishnu, who was also denied a ticket, is reportedly considering joining the Congress if Jagan’s sister, Y.S. Sharmila assumes leadership.
The political landscape is further shifting, with senior YSRCP leaders like Gadikota Dwarakanath Reddy and legislative council member C Ramachandraiah joining other parties, indicating the challenges and changes within the YSRCP as the elections draw nearer. The ongoing developments highlight the intricate dynamics and potential impact on the upcoming electoral battle in Andhra Pradesh.
