One of the accused in the murder case of Bahujan Samaj Party leader K Armstrong of Tamil Nadu was killed in an encounter on Saturday evening, according to the police. Historian Thiruvengadam, who was involved in the murder of BSP State President, has been killed in a police encounter that happened near Madhavaram in Chennai, according to the police.
Thiruvengadam had been following Armstrong for days before the murder and was allegedly keeping a constant watch on the activities of the BSP leader.
On July 11, Thiruvengadam, 33, who was in Sembiam police custody for five days, was taken to Palangimalai Armed Reserve Station for questioning.
K. Armstrong was allegedly hacked to death by six unidentified assailants near his home in Chennai’s Perambur area on July 5.
The BSP leader Armstrong was attacked by knives on the road, and he was fatally wounded by a group of men on a motorcycle. He was rushed to a private hospital in the city, where he was pronounced dead.
At least 11 suspects have been arrested so far in the case relating to the incident.
The incident has triggered massive political protests in the state. Opposition parties attacked the M.K. Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government, claiming that there is no law and order in the state.
BSP chief Mayawati has maintained that those arrested so far are not the real culprits and has demanded a CBI probe into Armstrong’s murder. She has sought the Prime Minister, Stalin, to refer the investigation to the Central authorities to ensure justice for the victim. Meanwhile, Stalin visited Armstrong’s family and assured them that the perpetrators of the crime would be brought to justice.
He expressed condolences to the wife and other family members of the BSP leader and assured that whoever was involved in this heinous act of murder would be punished under the law.
