Latest News in India: Even as it battles back-to-back derailments, Indian Railways is making rapid progress on the country’s first high-speed rail corridor that will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited is excavating in Mumbai to build an underground bullet train station at Bandra Kurla Complex and the first dual rail line underground tunnel for the 1.08 lakh crore railway project.
Work on the tunnel is progressing towards Thane Creek’s mouth. A portion of it will pass below the creek, making it India’s first undersea rail tunnel. The NHSRCL engineers have developed a one-of-a-kind ‘T intersection’ from the Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) at Ghansoli in Navi Mumbai that connects it. It is also the deepest point of the 21-kilometer-long tunnel, measuring 110 meters.
“The tunnel will be almost 25–30 meters deep into the earth’s crust from the bottom of Thane Creek,” said an engineer at the NHSRCL. “We are undertaking this job very carefully, using the New Austrian Tunneling Method, because there are buildings and other structures nearby. Despite the frequent rains, our work at this site continues.”.
Construction work is to be completed by December this year, following which the actual tunneling operation will be taken over by three giant tunnel-boring machines expected at the Ghansoli, Vikhroli, and BKC shafts.
