Palitana, a town in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, made history by becoming the first city in the world to ban the sale and consumption of non-vegetarian food. Non-vegetarian food is illegal here. The ban in Palitana covers the sale and consumption of meat, and the slaughter of animals for meat, making these acts illegal and punishable. The move follows sustained protests by around 200 Jain monks demanding the closure of around 250 butcher shops in the city. Their demonstrations demonstrated the religious and ethical beliefs of the Jain community, which considers non-violence (ahimsa) to be a central tenet of their faith.
