Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan have been elevated to the Supreme Court, an announcement which was made on Tuesday by law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X. Their appointments, approved by the President after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, will bring back the full strength of the apex court to 34 judges, including the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
A Supreme Court Collegium comprising CJI Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy met to recommend the appointment of judges to the apex court.
The Collegium recommended the elevation of Justice Mahadevan, presently acting Chief Justice of the Madras high court. According to the resolution, Justice Mahadevan hails from a backward community in the State of Tamil Nadu, and his appointment will bring in more diversity on the Supreme Court Bench.
