Abhinav Bindra, who won India’s first Olympic gold medal as an individual just got the Olympic Order. This is the biggest award the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gives out. It’s because he did a lot of great stuff for the Olympic movement. Bindra is part of the IOC Athletes Commission too. He’s the first person from India to get this big honor. The IOC leaders decided this at their meeting in Paris on Saturday. Different government groups shared this news on social media after that.
IOC President Thomas Bach told Bindra about the award in a letter. He wrote, “I’m happy to let you know that the IOC Executive Board decided today to give you the Olympic Order for your great work for the Olympic movement.” They’ll hand out the award on August 10 at the 142nd IOC Session in Paris.
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, who’s in charge of Youth Affairs and Sports, said nice things about Bindra. He tweeted, “@Abhinav_Bindra congrats on getting the Olympic Order for your big help to the Olympic Movement! We’re proud of what you’ve done, and you deserve it. Your name by itself has gotten lots of shooters and Olympians excited to do their best.”
The Lucknow Super Giants, an IPL team also gave a shout-out to Bindra’s big win on X (which used to be called Twitter). They posted, “History-maker once again, Congratulations Abhinav Bindra,” with a picture of Bindra grabbing India’s first solo gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
