On a YouTube podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, Mishra talked about hot topics in Indian cricket. He brought up the KL Rahul-Sanjeev Goenka thing and the Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir fight. He also shared what he thought about Gill becoming India’s captain for the T20I games against Zimbabwe not long ago. Mishra thinks Ruturaj Gaikwad would’ve been a better pick to captain, both to lead and to bat.
“I wouldn’t have picked him to lead the team. You watched the IPL this year; Gill has no clue how to run the show, he’s lost,” Mishra said. Mishra claimed that Gill being on the Indian team doesn’t make him fit to be captain. He admitted Gill did well in the IPL and for India, but thought they made him captain to give him a chance to learn how to lead. This wasn’t obvious when he was in charge of Gujarat Titans during the IPL.
Mishra talked about other guys who could be captains for T20Is, like Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad was there for the Zimbabwe T20Is from the beginning, while Samson showed up for the second game.
“There’s Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad who can lead India in T20Is. The BCCI is just trying to look at all the choices right now,” Mishra said.
When asked if Rahul Dravid’s favoritism had an impact on Gill’s captaincy, Mishra replied, “Everyone likes some things more than others. I don’t hate Shubman Gill; I like him too. But, I think Ruturaj is a better choice because he’s scored runs in tougher spots, whether for Chennai Super Kings or during the Asian Games. He’s a good pick, should stick with the team just like how Yashasvi Jaiswal was with the Indian side at the T20 World Cup.”
“He’s a guy who can step up in T20s, ODIs, and Tests. The big question is, who brings a cool head to the team? He doesn’t take many chances with his shots. He ought to get someone good to handle his social media stuff,” Mishra added.
