Vinesh Phogat garnered attention at the Paris Olympics 2024 with two remarkable wins, moving her closer to securing her first Olympic medal. Last year, she played a crucial role in the protests against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. In a historic match, Vinesh defeated top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the women’s 50kg freestyle round of 16. Susaki, a gold medallist and four-time world champion, had never lost any of her 82 international bouts before this.
Later, Vinesh triumphed over former European champion and 2018 world championship bronze-medallist Livach with a 7-5 score in the quarterfinal. She now stands one win away from securing her first Olympic medal, after enduring disappointments in two previous Olympics.
Vinesh, along with Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, led protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. Bajrang Punia, an Olympic medallist, posted on X, praising Vinesh’s achievements and reminding everyone of her struggles during the protests.
“Vinesh Phogat is a lioness who won back-to-back matches today, defeating a 4-time World Champion and an Olympic champion. But remember, she was mistreated in her own country, dragged on the streets, yet she’s now conquering the world,” Bajrang wrote.
Mahavir Phogat, Vinesh’s uncle and legendary Indian wrestler, expressed confidence in her winning a gold medal. “The country had high hopes for her in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. This time, I am confident she will fulfil my dream of winning gold,” he told ANI.
