India’s pace spearhead, Mohammed Shami, eyes a comeback during the upcoming Test series against England after being sidelined due to an ankle injury since the ODI World Cup final on November 19. Shami expressed confidence in his rehabilitation progress, assuring that he is on the right track to rejoin the squad for the crucial five-Test series set to commence on January 25.
Providing an update on his recovery, Shami mentioned that he has received positive feedback from the medical experts at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Despite encountering slight stiffness in his ankle, the fast bowler has initiated training sessions and is optimistic about making a successful return to competitive cricket against England.
Initially named in India’s Test squad for the two matches in South Africa, contingent upon his fitness, Shami did not accompany the team and was eventually withdrawn from the series. India managed to draw the series 1-1, securing a notable victory in the second Test in Cape Town. Shami, while acknowledging the team’s impressive performance, expressed his eagerness to contribute and make a comeback at the earliest opportunity.
Reflecting on India’s achievements in South Africa, Shami praised the team’s collective effort and outstanding bowling display. Despite missing the series due to injury, he remains focused on regaining fitness and returning to action against England. Shami’s absence was notable in India’s T20I squad for the matches against Afghanistan on January 11, 14, and 17.
During his visit to Delhi to receive the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting honor, on January 9, Shami highlighted his determination to resume competitive cricket. As the highest wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami showcased exceptional form with 24 wickets in just seven games, boasting an impressive average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20.
The upcoming Test series against England will witness matches in Hyderabad (Jan 25-29), Visakhapatnam (Feb 2-6), Rajkot (Feb 15-19), Ranchi (Feb 23-27), and Dharamsala (Mar 7-11). This series holds significance as it marks India’s third appearance in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. Currently in second place behind Australia, India aims to make a strong push for the top spot in the WTC standings.
As Shami targets a comeback, Indian cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate his return to the bowling attack, bringing experience, skill, and wicket-taking prowess to the team. The Test series against England is poised to be a pivotal chapter in India’s quest for supremacy in the World Test Championship. Fans will be watching closely as Mohammed Shami strives to overcome his injury setback and contribute significantly to India’s success on the international cricket stage.
