Is Cristiano Ronaldo done playing for Portugal’s national team? A new report talks about what the famous soccer player plans to do next.
After Portugal got knocked out of Euro 2024 in the quarter-finals, people wondered if Ronaldo would stop playing for his country. Ronaldo didn’t do great in the tournament, not scoring any goals before the team lost. But a report says Ronaldo doesn’t want to quit playing for Portugal yet. He wants to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and hopes to win the big trophy for his country.
Ronaldo didn’t do much at Euro 2024, not helping Portugal score goals. The team got to the quarter-finals because their goalie Diogo Costa did great in a penalty shootout after Ronaldo missed a big penalty. When Portugal played France in the quarters, they had a hard time scoring, which led to another shootout where France won.
But a story in Relevo says Ronaldo’s not done playing for his country yet. He wants to play in the 2026 World Cup and be the first player to show up and score in six different World Cups.
Ronaldo started Euro 2024 after a great year with Al-Nassr, a team in Saudi Arabia. He scored 50 goals in all the games he played. But his good playing didn’t help Portugal much in the tournament.
Portugal beat Slovenia in the quarter-finals. After the game, Ronaldo gave a hint that he might not play in another European Championship.
“Football gives you sadness at first and happiness in the end. You can’t explain these feelings. I had a shot to put our team ahead, but I couldn’t do it. Oblak made a good save. I needed to look at the penalty again; I’m not sure if I took a good or bad shot, but I didn’t miss once all year, and when it mattered most, Oblak stopped it. The main thing is to be happy about qualifying. Our team did a great job, we kept fighting till the end, and if you look at the game, Portugal deserved to win because they had more chances,” he said.
We’re still waiting for Ronaldo to say what he plans to do with the national team in the future
