The German basketball team who emerged winners of the 2023 FIBA World Championship is expected to be in the Paris Olympics. Current Lakers and Barca’s player Dennis Schroder who was recently named the team’s official flag bearer for Germany has revealed horror racism encounters he has faced in his basketball career. Schroder said in an interview with Spiegel Sport, “I am attacked because I am Black, and my wife Ellen is attacked because she is married to a Black man, but that is why one is chosen as a flag bearer also; it is about crying out against racism, it also celebrates our national basketball team for the past few years.
Germany basketball will have a hard contest in the Olympics with boasting the best talent such as LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Stephen Curry.
Schroder, whose mother was a Gambian-born, is also aware of how important it was to be permitted to bear the German flag in what many parties referred to as ‘foreign infested’ Germany. He said, “This sends a strong signal in a way that someone like me can represent Germany”.
Schroder also discussed his role model, Dirk Nowitzki who is recognized as the best European player in the NBA. Schroder said Nowitzki was special to him because he was the flag bearer for Germany during the 2008 Olympics, which left him touched. He pondered, “I recall seeing Dirk bear the flag in Beijing in 2008 and thought it was the ultimate glory which an athlete could get and now it’s my ticket to offer a message for my nation and its principles.
New Olympic adventure in basketball will start with the match between Germany and Japan where the German team Schroder has to win against the former teammate Hachimura from Lakers. They will also be playing against Brazil and they will be concluding their group games against the host nation France which parade the youngster Victor Wembanyama.
