latest indian cricket news : Gautam Gambhir, the new Team India coach, talked about what’s next for old-timers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Even though they’re getting up there in years, Gambhir hinted they might still play in the 2027 ODI World Cup if they stay fit. By then, Rohit will be 40 and Kohli 38.
At his first time talking to reporters as coach, Gambhir said Rohit 37, and Virat 35 still have a lot to give. “These two guys can still play a ton of cricket. With the Champions Trophy and a big Australia tour coming up, they’ll be pumped up,” he said.
Rohit Sharma stays as the ODI captain and the Test captain too. People think he’ll be in charge of the team for the Champions Trophy in 2025. What Gambhir said matches up with what Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, hinted at before about Rohit being the leader in 2025.
“They’ve proven what they can do when it counts, like in the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup,” Gambhir also said.
Regarding the 2027 World Cup, Gambhir did not exclude Rohit and Virat, stating, “Hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 World Cup as well.”
Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar held the press conference ahead of Gambhir’s first series as head coach, the tour of Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team, while Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain of the T20I team. Shubman Gill was appointed vice-captain in both formats, and Hardik Pandya was not given a leadership role.
