Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of India’s cricket team, has started to put together his support staff. The BCCI looks at a few people for the bowling coach job. Zaheer Khan, Lakshmipathy Balaji and R Vinay Kumar are on their list. But Cricbuzz says Gambhir wants Morne Morkel, who used to bowl fast for South Africa, to get the job too.
The BCCI has started talks with Morkel, as the report suggests. Morkel, an ex-South African player, boasts a strong record of 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is. He had a stint as Pakistan’s bowling coach during the ODI World Cup in India. However, he quit before his contract ended.
Gambhir and Morkel teamed up at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons working under Andy Flower as head coach. Gambhir has since moved to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor. Morkel, on the other hand, stayed put at LSG now under new head coach Justin Langer.
Gambhir’s link to Morkel began in 2014. Morkel started playing for KKR that year. Gambhir led the team then. Gambhir often talks up Morkel. He says Morkel is the toughest bowler he’s ever played against.
They haven’t decided for sure yet. They’re thinking about Morkel’s family and how much he’d need to travel for the job. Morkel lives in Seaforth Sydney. His wife, Roz Kelly, works as a sports presenter. They have two kids together.
Morkel might take over Mhambrey’s position as part of Dravid’s crew if he gets the job. Gambhir’s support team could also welcome ex-KKR player ten Doeschate and Nayar to join their ranks.
