Gareth Southgate said on Tuesday he’s stepping down as England’s manager just two days after Spain beat them in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate wrote in a statement, “It’s time for a change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.”
Southgate took over the team in 2016 when England was struggling. Under his leadership, England reached three semi-finals and two finals in four major tournaments. Before Southgate, England had only made it to three major tournament semi-finals and one final, which was their World Cup win in 1966.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England,” the 53-year-old said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.”
