India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, talked about some big changes in the team since he started. When someone asked him about how he gets along with Virat Kohli, the star player, Gambhir said their relationship is private and not for the media to gossip about.
Over the years, Gambhir and Kohli had a bunch of fights on the field in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This made people wonder if they could work together on the national team. But now, they have to team up starting with the T20 and ODI games against Sri Lanka from July 27.
“My bond with Virat Kohli is just between us and not for ratings,” Gambhir said. “What’s important is we’re standing up for 140 crore Indians. We’ve sent messages to each other. It doesn’t matter if we chatted before or after they picked me. He’s a top-notch player, and I look up to him.”
When it comes to their old interactions, Gambhir added, “We’ve talked a lot, and everyone should be able to fight for their spot on the team.”
Now that big names like Rohit Sharma and Kohli are done with T20 Internationals after India won the T20 World Cup, it’s super important to handle the workload of key players like Jasprit Bumrah, Gambhir pointed out.
Gambhir thinks Sharma and Kohli, who’ll now focus on ODIs and Tests, will be around for most of the team’s games in these formats. “It’s crucial to manage the workload for a player like Jasprit Bumrah. Now that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are playing two formats, I reckon they’ll show up for most matches,” Gambhir said.
