England lost 2-1 to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, and Harry Kane felt sad about it. He said this loss will be a little painful.
England have now lost the last two major tournaments in a row, while Italy beat them on penalties at Euro 2020. They were also knocked out in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
Kane spoke to ITV and said it was hard to take this latest disappointment. He had to leave the game after 60 minutes. Kane was pleased with England’s great effort to make it 1-1 through Cole Palmer’s goal. This happened just after Spain went ahead in the second half when Nico Williams scored.
Looking back on their competitive run, Kane pointed out how difficult it was for England to bounce back after being behind, but felt sad that they couldn’t seize the chance to win. Referring to Spain’s game-winning goal from Mikel Oyarzabal near the end, he said England had trouble dealing with late crosses.
Although he has been great in football, Kane brought up that he is still yet to win any major team trophy, and felt devastated to have missed out on another shot at the Euros. He said it hurts to come up short in these big moments and he knows it’s tough to get to finals. As for Gareth Southgate’s future as England manager, Kane said Southgate will need some time to think about what comes next.
He also mentioned how the team wanted to win the trophy for their manager, but they couldn’t bring it this time. Kane called the defeat a missed opportunity and talked about how difficult it is to reach the final. He said this loss will stick with him and his teammates for a long time.
