An ICC source privy to the developments, however, said that one of the main areas of interest for everyone at the ICC is when Jay Shah takes over the reins of the world body.
Everyone’s attention will be on BCCI secretary Jay Shah during the four-day ICC Annual Conference in Colombo starting Friday. There might be important discussions about when he will replace New Zealander Greg Barclay as the ICC chairman. The conference, starting with the board meeting on Friday, will likely focus on losses of over USD 20 million from hosting T20 World Cup games in the USA.
While the nine-point AGM agenda (a copy of which is with PTI) doesn’t list the financial details, the board will discuss it as part of the “post-event report,” a standard procedure.
The agenda also includes appointing a new external auditor, discussing ICC memberships, reporting from the associate members’ meeting, and presenting ICC development awards.
Another key topic, India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, isn’t officially on the ICC Board’s agenda unless the chair brings it up under “Any Other Business.”
An ICC source said that one of the main interests at the ICC is when Shah will take over as chairman.
“It’s not about how, but when, as he has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling-off period starts in 2025 as per the constitution. However, if he is to take over in 2025, Barclay can’t complete his third term from December 2024 to December 2026,” the source said.
“There’s a thought that what if the ICC chairman’s term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, keeping the total term at six years.”
If Barclay’s current term extends to three years, Shah can finish his six years as BCCI secretary and become ICC chairman in 2025 for three years during his BCCI cooling-off period. Then, in 2028, he could return and become BCCI president.
