Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis shared his thoughts on Gautam Gambhir’s new role as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah announced Gambhir’s appointment on Tuesday.
Kallis, who played with Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), praised Gambhir’s cricketing mind. “It’s great to see Gautam getting into coaching. He has a really good cricket brain, plays the game aggressively, and will bring a lot of fire. The players will learn a lot from him. He’ll add significant value to the Indian team. I wish him all the best–though not too much against us,” Kallis said on Star Sports.
Gambhir, a former left-handed opener for India, also served as KKR’s team mentor in the Indian Premier League 2024, where KKR won their third IPL title under his guidance.
Jay Shah expressed his confidence in Gambhir on his official X account, stating that Gambhir’s experience and vision make him the ideal candidate to lead Indian cricket forward. “It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey,” Shah wrote.
Gambhir succeeds Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended after India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, where they defeated South Africa by seven runs to win the prestigious trophy for the first time in 17 years.
