Japan footballer Kaishu Sano has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, local media reported on Wednesday. The 23-year-old midfielder, along with two friends also in their 20s, allegedly assaulted the woman at a Tokyo hotel on Sunday. The reports, citing unnamed police sources, stated that the woman, in her 30s, called the police immediately after the alleged incident. The police then arrested the three men near the hotel.
Japanese police were not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP.
Sano, who has made four appearances for Japan and was part of the squad for this year’s Asian Cup in Qatar, recently signed with German Bundesliga club Mainz from Kashima Antlers.
In a statement, Kashima expressed concern over the situation involving their former player but stated that they could not provide further details and would monitor the situation closely.
In a related incident earlier this year, Japan’s Junya Ito left the Asian Cup after being investigated for an alleged sexual assault in Osaka last year. Ito has denied the allegations and is suing his accusers for 200 million yen ($1.3 million) in damages.
