India’s athletics team suffered a let-down with national record holder Parul Choudhary and Jeswin Aldrin out of the reckoning at the Paris Olympics. Parul Chaudhary in the women’s 3000m steeplechase race came eighth in her heat and 21 in the overall position on the last day on Sunday. She managed to finish the race in a time of 9:23. 39, this is her best over the season though not close to her national record of 9:15. 31.
Only the top five from each heat qualified for the final. Parul, who had trained in the USA before the Games, had also not qualified for the women’s 5000m race.
In the men’s long jump, Jeswin Aldrin fouled his first two attempts and jumped 7.61m on his third try. He placed 13th in Group B and 26th overall. To qualify for the finals, athletes needed to jump at least 8.15m or be among the top 12. Aldrin, who reached the Games through world rankings, had a season best of 7.99m and a personal best of 8.42m.
