Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen faced a tough defeat against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal play-off at the Paris Olympics, ending in a 13-21, 21-16, 21-11 loss. Sen started strong, but a critical nine-point streak from Lee in the second game shifted the match’s momentum.
“I had my chances in the second set and could have definitely done better. But credit to him, he played a really good game. I think at the moment I’m just not able to think right now,” Sen said after the match.
Sen, who had to replace his bandage multiple times due to an injured right arm, felt the interruptions impacted his focus. “In between the points, there was blood on the floor, so they had to wipe it. Sometimes, I was losing the momentum of just having a break in the game and then coming again and trying to refocus on the match. But overall the hand is okay,” he shared.
This loss implies that it will be the first time India will be going back home without a badminton medal in the last 12 years. Previous winners comprise Saina Nehwal (2012) & PV Sindhu (2016,2021).
Sen started to put pressure on Lee right from the start and focused on his ass backend part to establish a commanding lead. However in the second game after leading 8-3 , Sen collapsed and lost nine straight points. Lee seized this opportunity to demonstrate his alertness and poise and then he unleashed his blows that landed and sealed victory.
However, the defeat could be explained by the fact that Sen looked promising as he displayed commitment by remaining aggressive early in the fight. This is so true as this Olympic experience is bound to play a significant role in growth and any future achievements in badminton of this man.
