The Indian women’s table tennis team scripted history on Monday overcoming Romania 3-2 at the Paris Olympics to enter the quarter finals with Manika Batra leading from the front. India stands at the 11th place and the opponent in the match was Romania a team which held the 4th seeds.
The match started with Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath easily defeating Adina Diaconu and Elizabeta Samara in the doubles match 3-0. Manika next beat the higher rated Bernadette Szocs of USA 3-0 to give India a 2-0 lead.
But India stained when Sreeja suffered a defeat to Samara in singles match by 2-3. Bernadette was also up against Archana in what was bound to be a heated match that turned out to be closely fought until Bernadette won 3-1 to bring the score to 2-2 in the tied game.
The ultimate face-off was between India and Adina and for the third time, Manika stood up for her team and won 3 sets to none. The fighting Indian will now take on either the United States or Germany in the quarter final.
Last week Manika and Sreeja made it to the round of 16 of the individual event of table tennis at Olympics first for India, though they could not go further.
